What a difference a year makes. Just 364 days ago, Rocky River’s boys soccer team hosted Elyria Catholic and sent the Panthers home a 5-0 loser.
Fast forward to this year’s get-together and it looked like the visiting Pirates might roll again. Rocky River scored 59 seconds into Tuesday’s (Sep. 13) match to take an early 1-0 lead but that is all the Pirates would muster as the Panthers came from behind to earn a 2-1 victory at Knights of Columbus Field.
With the win, Elyria Catholic is now 3-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Great Lakes Conference.
After the early Pirate strike, EC evened the match on a sliding goal by senior Reid Burke that was set up by senior Andrew Ferguson and sophomore Gavin Velazquez. The teams went into the break tied at one and it stayed that way until Ferguson scored off a pass from Velazquez to put the Panthers in front with just 10:14 to go in the match.
Solid defense in front of junior goalkeeper Jakob Hwang – who was terrific Tuesday night – allowed the Panthers to hang on.
EC will now turn its attention to Thursday’s (Sep. 15) non-conference match against Open Door Christian School. That action is slated for a 5:00 p.m. start.
