Elyria Catholic High School
Lakewood High School
A strong third quarter helped the Elyria Catholic girls basketball team knock off Lakewood High School by a score of 50-38 on Wednesday (Dec. 30) night at Harding Middle School.
The Panthers won the first quarter by three (10-7) and both teams scored 13 points in the second period so EC took a 23-20 lead into the break. Coach Eric Rothgery’s team outscored Lakewood by seven (16-9) in the third stanza to give itself some breathing room and the Panthers hung on down the stretch to get out of town with a 12-point victory.
With the win, Elyria Catholic improved to 7-2 overall. The Panthers are idle for a week until next Wednesday’s (Jan. 6) conference showdown at Rocky River High School.
Seniors showed the way on Wednesday as Riley Schill scored 16 points and her classmate Josie Carandang chipped in 11. Juniors Sam Filiaggi (10) and Nora Hopkins (seven) combined for 17 points while sophomore Megan Scheibelhut (four) and freshman Regan Schill (two) gave Rothgery some nice minutes.
Lakewood got within six at 44-38 with exactly 1:00 to play but Scheibelhut calmly hit two free throws, Filiaggi scored on a lay-up off an inbounds play and Carandang drilled two at the line while the Panthers continually came up with big stops at the defensive end.
Wednesday marked the sixth time in nine tries that the Panthers have held the opposition to 40 or fewer points.
