Stephanie Griffin 2017 Softball v. Rocky River

The Elyria Catholic softball team advanced to the district semifinals with an 11-1 sectional final win against Trinity on Friday (May 12).

EC, seeded fifth in the Avon Lake district, went on the road and took care of the fourth-seeded Trojans in five innings.

The Panthers scored a run in the first, two more in the second and exploded for five in the third to jump out to an early 8-0 lead. After EC scored another run in the top of the fourth and Trinity answered with a run in the home half of that inning, it was a 9-1 game.

Two Panther runs in the top of the fifth and a quick home half of the fifth ended the game due to the state’s mercy rule.

Freshman Stephanie Griffin was 4-4 with three runs scored. She also drove in a run. Senior Sam Filiaggi had two hits – one of which was a double – and drove in a pair.

Junior pitcher Ashley Cascio worked all five innings and allowed just one hit. The Trojan run was unearned. Cascio walked four and K’d eight.

The Panthers will take on top-seeded Columbia on Thursday (May 18) at Avon Lake High School. That game will start at 4:00 p.m.

First, the Panthers will conclude the GLC portion of their schedule with a 5:00 p.m. game against Normandy at Nike Park on Monday (May 15).
