The Elyria Catholic softball team used an 11-run fifth inning to beat Normandy 14-4 on Tuesday (April 11) afternoon.
It was EC’s first win of the season, and the first career victory for new head coach Megan Bashak.
EC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the home half of the first but Normandy responded with two runs in the second and one in the third to knot the game at three.
The Invaders scored their fourth unanswered run in the top of the fifth before EC hung the 11-spot to end the game in accordance with the state’s mercy rule. Sophomore Janae Edwards worked the count full and drew a bases loaded walk to bring in the final run.
Junior Ashley Cascio was the winning pitcher. She worked all five innings and allowed four hits and no earned runs. She K’d six and walked two.
Senior Sam Filiaggi went 2-4 with a two-run homer in the fifth inning and she scored three runs. Her classmate Biddy Pronesti was 2-2 with a walk and a sac fly and she drove in two in addition to scoring a run herself.
Freshman Stephanie Griffin was 3-4 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored and her twin sister Kaylie was 2-3 with a walk, a run batted in and she too scored three runs.
EC is idle until Saturday’s (April 15) make-up game against Oberlin High School. That contest will start at 11:00 a.m. at Elyria Catholic High School and the two teams will play just one game.
