Sophomore pitcher Jack Laird went the distance as Elyria Catholic traveled to Normandy and took care of the Invaders, 4-3, on Thursday (April 13) afternoon.
Laird allowed six hits and walked two while striking out six. Only two of the three runs he allowed were earned.
The Panthers jumped out to 4-0 lead after the home half of the fourth before the Invaders pushed a run across in the bottom of the fifth. Two more Normandy runs were tacked on in the bottom of the seventh before Laird shut the door.
Six different Panthers had a hit. Sophomores Leighton Banjoff and Jace Drwal as well as junior Ryan Strittmather all had two-hit days.
Senior shortstop Tony LoParo had a hit, drove in a run and scored one himself.
Banjoff crossed home plate twice and was driven in by seniors Jeff Spencer and Andrew Abrahamowicz.
With the win, the Panthers are now 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the Great Lakes Conference.
EC, 12-0 in conference play a year ago, is the last remaining unbeaten program in the seven-team league.
The Panthers will take a quick break for Easter before returning to action with a home game on Monday (April 17) against Holy Name. That game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start at EC.
