Elyria Catholic senior Stan Bleich took second in the 145-pound weight class at the 2017 Ohio High School Division III Individual State Wrestling Tournament, held this weekend (March 9-11) at the Schottenstein Center on the campus of The Ohio State University.
Bleich, who took sixth in the state as a sophomore at 126 pounds and third last year at 132, finished his career as a three-time state placer.
He opened the tournament with a 7-2 win over Swanton junior Chase Moore on Thursday (March 9) and he won his match on Friday (March 10) morning against Triad senior Zack Zizzo on a 10-5 count.
In a highly-anticipated match Friday night, Bleich took care of Norwalk St. Paul senior Derek Gross, 8-2. Gross entered the bout with a 53-0 mark.
On Saturday (March 11) night, Mechanicsburg senior Tanner Smith bested Bleich 5-1 in the title bout.
Bleich finished his career with more than 150 career victories. He was the first Panther to place second in the state since R.J. Hickey in 2004.
Saturday marked the ninth time in program history that a Panther wrestled for the state title.
